Would you rather be smart or happy? That's the question posed by the brilliant novel Eastern Standard Tribe, by Cory Doctorow. The novel, which I highly recommend (and which you can download for free at the above link), is narrated primarily in flashbacks by a man sitting on the roof of a mental institution to which he has been wrongly committed. He's got a pencil up his nose and is contemplating giving himself a "homebrew lobotomy". But he can't decide: is it better to be smart or happy?

I've been mulling this question over in my head for the last few days, and I still can't decide. I think my problem is that for me, happiness and intelligence are necessary to each other. I don't think I would be very happy as a stupid person, and I know I don't act with much intelligence when I'm unhappy. But all of my (questionable) intelligence isn't bringing me much happiness, and when I am happy, my judgement isn't good enough to keep me that way for very long. I'd like to think you could have both, but as someone who currently only sporadically has much of either, I'd settle for one I could rely on.

So maybe it's a neccessary decision. Which would you choose?
